What You Need to Know Before Your Appointment
Why Mask Fit Testing Matters
Under Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act and CSA Standard Z94.4, workers who use respirators (like N95s) must be fit tested every 2 years, or sooner if:
The model, size, or style of respirator changes
You have significant changes to your face (weight change, dental work, surgery, facial hair, etc.)
Fit testing ensures your mask provides the proper seal and protection.

Before You Arrive
Please make sure you are prepared for your fit test:
✅ No eating, drinking, smoking, vaping, or chewing gum for at least 15 minutes before your test (these can affect your sense of taste).
✅ Be clean-shaven where the mask seals – facial hair (beards, stubble, moustaches along the seal line) will cause the mask to fail.
✅ Bring Government photo ID.
✅ Know your employer’s required mask model(s) if applicable (ex: 3M 1870+, 3M 1860S).
✅ Wear comfortable clothing that does not interfere with the mask or hood.

Important Notes
You must be clean-shaven for the test and whenever wearing a tight-fitting respirator at work.
Fit testing must be redone if your mask type changes or if there are major changes to your face shape.
Certificates are required by employers in healthcare, dental, construction, industrial, and other regulated workplaces in Ontario.
Bring With You
